One more in the series to 2009’s blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops treads in unknown territory in the Call of Duty series and the video game industry at large by delving into the not-so cold conflicts of the Cold War. Some situations are present in the newer Call of Duty: Moderne Warfare 3 now available.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Splattered across the game's large Cold War canvas is a very familiar Call of Duty from the past. Once again, we're shooting our way along straight paths, more often than not following a single indestructible character as he yells out orders. Options for navigation are kept to an absolute minimum, a requirement that feels almost suffocating at times, especially when we're shown surprisingly rich and detailed environments like Vietnamese jungles and the inner chambers of the Pentagon only to be told we can't go anywhere. That is it. Black Ops will surprise and astound you.
For the play mode, you are almost exclusively the soldier Alex Mason – a special operations veteran caught up in the Bay of Pigs invasion and then plunged into a secret war that quickly descends into a fraught psychological experience. As the action goes back and forth between Cuba, Vietnam and Russia, an interesting tale plays out concerning shady CIA dealings, Nazi experiments and communist growth, all bubbling beneath the accepted "facts" of the era. It's similar to the Modern Warfare titles in that it actually boils down to a classic manhunt in the end, but while some some things get lost in the rush, this is easily the most best and well-constructed story that has been seen from this franchise in a number of years. Although it's not quite the time-travelling crazied out drug using orgy some were expecting, there are several well-handled plot twists that make Modern Warfare's narrative scheme look even more brutish and incoherent.
Call of Duty Black Ops the entire COD series is available at Kidz Toy Stop. Special pricing.
